Brushes perform a very important function in the filter - they catch thicker impurities. Due to this function, the brushes should be placed in the filter as the first filtration layer. The initial cleaning of water mechanically is very important - it  consists in creating comfortable conditions for bacteria , decomposing harmful nitrogen compounds in the next after the brushes of the biological deposit in the filter.

The structure allows free flow of water through the entire filtration mass. The flowing water brings the bacterial flora oxygen and food, and ammonia and nitrates are spread out.
